How Employee Training Should Change During the COVID-19 Pandemic

During a global pandemic, it is natural that many things must change. One of these things is employee training. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important that you train your employees somewhat differently during this unique time than you did before.

Emphasize Existing Health and Safety Protocols

It’s even more important now to emphasize your business’s existing health and safety protocols. During this pandemic, health and safety should be the priority of any workplace’s activities. If you already have a policy stating that employees will wash their hands, remind your employees that they are expected to do so. If you have a policy about workers staying home when they feel ill, bring it up in the training. Strict adherence to already-existing protocols can make a big difference.

Introducing New Rules

It is important that you introduce appropriate new rules for the pandemic. Make you’re your staff is made aware of new protocol required in order to protect against the virus. For example, inform employees of new, mandatory daily practices such as temperature checks, frequent hand washing, and required protective gear such as face coverings and/or gloves. In training, make sure your employees understand why and how these practices will be carried out.

Signs can help remind employees to wash their hands and stick to other rules which may be unfamiliar. Posting messages reminding them of these rules around the workplace can prove extremely helpful, as messages often need repeating several times before they stick.

Teach About COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is essential that employees understand how to recognize possible COVID-19 cases and how to respond to them. That way, employees will be able to be vigilant and take action if necessary, in order to slow or even prevent the spread of the virus.

Topics which should be covered in employee training include subjects such as symptoms of coronavirus, how to isolate individuals who have the illness, and how to report possible cases. Employees should be taught how the virus is spread, the signs of COVID-19 exposure, how to react to COVID-19 symptoms, and how to use Personal Protective Equipment. Your staff should be prepared to protect themselves and others against the spread of the disease.

A global pandemic need not bring business to a halt, but it does require some flexibility and change. Reminders of old rules and the implementation of new ones, as well as a focus on COVID-19 awareness, should become part of your employee training during the pandemic.
