I Got Fired. Now What?
Thursday, March 17, 2022 careers

Getting fired can be a devastating experience. If you are in a position where you were working for one employer and then suddenly your boss informs you that you are no longer needed, it can be a disheartening experience. The first thought that might come to your mind is how might you get another job, but of course, this is the easy bit. Most of us will jump straight into applying for the job. However, there are actually more factors that you need to consider. While trying to find another job, you may find yourself going through some difficult emotions. You may feel defeated, angry, anxious, or even depressed.

Do not go through this time alone. There are people who can help alleviate these feelings. Hopefully, with the help of family and friends, you will be able to move past this experience and move forward. Here are four important things to help you as you move forward.

Get Support

Getting emotional support is crucial in overcoming this difficult time. Having people in your life to talk to can be a very helpful resource. Talking with people who have experienced the same situation that you are going through can release a lot of pressure and will help remove some of the sadness.

“When you are grieving, talking about it helps to heal.”

― Judith Viorst

Also, having people give you advice and encourage you to move ahead with your life can be really helpful. While your friends and family can alleviate some of the sadness that you may be experiencing, a counselor or psychologist can relieve you of the anger, anxiety, and depression. They can also help you find new interests and find ways to be productive in the future.

Find new Interests

Finding new interests can be a great distraction. Many people will have a hard time giving up their old jobs. However, this can actually present an opportunity to find new hobbies, study a new skill, or even volunteer.

“It’s harder to give up something that you’ve had a passion for for a long time.”

― Michael Slezak

Being able to find new interests can be especially difficult when you do not have a lot of free time. Creating a schedule for yourself that accommodates your interests can help you be productive and overcome this difficult time.

Find New Roles

Finding new roles can be a really difficult process. It is not uncommon for people to develop deep rooted emotions towards their old jobs. They may feel that because of their work history they “belong” somewhere. However, finding a new job can be just as difficult as finding a new job for the first time.

“It took me about two months just to line up the next set of interviews.”

― Gerald Friedman

You may have to hunt for jobs that may be completely outside of your current interests. However, pursuing new roles can help discover new passions and help you understand if you truly want to commit your time and effort into a certain role.

Look for new communities

Being able to network with people in the same industry as yourself can help introduce new people to new interests. Finding new communities can also help you meet new people.

“You don’t have to isolate yourself. There are lots of other people out there who are interested in the same things you are.”

― Mike Rosenbloom

Having a community of friends that understand what you are going through can be extremely helpful during difficult times. Finding new communities that have similar interests to you may be the best way to find new friends.

With four important things to help you during this difficult time, you are one step closer to recovering and moving forward.
